The Loftin Family
Name Origin: England
The surname Loftin evolved from several location names used by England's ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. For example, there was a village of Loftus and Lofthouse, both in Yorkshire.
Spelling variations of this family name include: Lofton, Loftis, Loftus, Loftiss, Loftos, Lofthouse and others.
First found in Yorkshire where they were established from very ancient times - some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William of Hastings in 1066 A.D.The Loftin family surname can be found in Virginia as early as 1674 on various deeds and records. The name Loftin can be found throughout the US, but most prominently in North Carolina and Texas. My research traces our definite earliest branch of the Loftin family to John Loftin, born 29 November 1740 in Sussex, Brunswick & Greenville Counties, VA. Some say his father was Benoni Loftin - others say it was his brother Cornelius Loftin. Regardless, the root still seems to go back to their Great-Grandfather Leonard Loftin, born between 1610 - 1616 in England, as being the first Loftin to come to the US.
