Mrs. Johnson Burned to Death |
|
Mrs. Nancy Johnson was horribly burned
about 10 o’clock Friday and died two hours later. Mrs.
Johnson had been failing mentally for some time and had
made threats to take her own life. At one time
attempted to drown herself and at another time to hang
herself.
It is thought she fired her clothes
purposely. Three matches were found about fifty yards
from where she was lying when those who heard her
screams reached her. The trail of fire from her burning
clothes lead where the matches were lying by a rock and
two of the matches had been struck. Mrs. Johnson was
found about 150 yards from her house.
She
had been left alone; her children were in the field
picking cotton. Her son, about 16 years old, was the
first to arrive at the scene. Dr. Yount was nearby and
was called, but could do nothing. The woman’s clothes
were all burned off and she died after terrible
suffering.
Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of Mrs.
Sallie Leslie and widow of Henry Johnson, who was killed
by a falling tree 16 years ago. She had since lived
with her two children on her mother-in-law’s place, Mrs.
Vine Johnson, near New Stirling Church.
The remains were buried at New Stirling
on Saturday. Rev. Mr. Beaver preached the funeral at
New Stirling, N.C., Sept 25, 1905. |
