Two of Sampson and Elizabeth's sons, Burnell and Lewis, were
Patriot soldiers during the Revolutionary War - Burnell in North
Carolina and Lewis in Virginia.
Lewis served as private in the Virginia militia and was promoted
to Captain. He was taken prisoner and held for nine months on a
prison ship. When released, he became acquainted with
General George Washington. Washington gave him a sword to
replace the one that had been lost and this sword was displayed
by family members for decades in Georgia. Lewis
moved to Duplin Co. about 1780 and served as a Captain of the
Duplin Militia. He moved to Anson Co. by 1790 and on to
Screven County GA by 1800. Lewis drew land in the 1832
Cherokee land Lottery as a Revolutionary War Soldier.
According to DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), Lewis
ended his career as a Major. |
