Clement Lanier was born about 1590 in England and was the son of
Nicholas Laniere, the Elder and Lucretia Bassano. |
Clement was Gentleman of the King's Chamber to James I and
Charles I, a title often afforded to musicians and actors of the
day, Musician in Ordinary on recorders (a type of flute) 1625,
and King's musician of wind instruments 1633-42. |
Clement married Hannah Rebecca Collett in March of 1628 at St.
Margaret's, Lee (in London). |
When Charles I was executed, the Laniers suffered financial
setbacks and hardships while they supported the Prince of Wales
(later Charles II) and his struggles to regain the throne.
Clement' s cousin Nicholas Lanier (son of John and Frances) had
assembled a great art collection for their sovereign Charles I.
During the The Protectorate, the collection was dispersed at
auction. Clement and his brother Jerome Lanier were able to
purchase some of the paintings. After the English Restoration,
the Laniers were able to regain some of their fortunes. |
He was Musician for the flute 1660-62. |
Clement and Hannah had eleven children. |

In his will of February 1658/59, Clement
leaves to his oldest daughter, Hannah, his house and 40 pounds.
Money was left outright to Nicholas, Lionel, William and
Frances, and also to Elizabeth and Susanna when they became of
age or married. The will of Clement names Susanna and
Elizabeth as not being of age in 1658, which would make them
born after 1638; however, the baptism of Susanna is given as
June 10, 1633. Children Lucretia and Charles were dead.
But to John and Robert, who had already left home, he left money
"when they shall come to demand the same of my Executrix".
Hannah's burial was recorded at St. Alphege as December 22,
1653. Clement Lanier was buried November 6, 1661, both in
East Greenwich. His will, proved December 3, 1661, was
registered 20 May 1662. |
