William Rufus King     Born: 16 Dec 1812, Sampson County, NC Died:Feb 1880, Warren County, NC    William Rufus King was born 16 Dec 1812 in Sampson County, NC, to John King and Anne Cogdell.     William married Mary Polly Manly prior to 1834 and had at least 7 children.     Children of William Rufus King and Mary Polly Manly Name Birth Death Spouse James King 1834     John King 1836     Allen King 1838     Benjamin King 1840     Sally King 16 Sep 1845 Sampson Co, NC 26 May 1918 Piney Green, Sampson Co, NC Furnifold Fernie Harrell m. 14 Dec 1865 David King 1846     Lewis King 1850     Birth dates for this chart were established from the 1850 Census       The 1850 Census shows William and Polly living on the south side of the Neuse River in Wayne County, NC.  William's age is listed as 39 and Polly as 37.  He is working as a farmer and has Real Estate valued at $575.  The Census shows that he was born in Sampson County, NC and Polly was born is Wayne County, NC.  Their children on this Census are: James (age 16), John (age 14), Allen (age 12), Ben (age 10), Sally (age 8) and David (age 4).  There is a 16-year-old girl living with the family named Mary King who was also born in Sampson County, NC.  Since she's listed out of numerical order with the rest of the children implies that she was not one of William and Polly's children.  She could have been a younger sister or a niece.   1850 Wayne County, NC Census   Name Age Sex Occupation Real Estate Value Birth Attended School 20 Years Old Can't Read or Write First Last William King 39 M Farmer $575 Sampson   X Polly " 37 F     Wayne     James " 16 M Labor on Farm         John " 14 M           Allen " 12 M           Ben " 10 M           Sally " 8 F           David " 4 M           Mary " 16 F     Sampson           In 1860 the King family are still living in Wayne County, NC.  Page 86 of the Census shows them living in the Buck Swamp District with a Mount Olive Post Office.  William's age is listed as 52 but he was actually 47.  Older sons James, John and Allen are no longer living with the family implying they have married and started their own families.  Benjamin, Sally and David are still living with the family and Lewis was born shortly after the 1850 Census.  Note that only the boys have attended school during the year and that Polly can't read or write.  William's Real Estate value has decreased $111 from 1850.   1860 Wayne County, NC Census   Name Age Occupation Estate Value Birth Attended School Can't Read Write First Last Real Estate Personal Estate Wm.
