William Gavin Hamilton

Born: 1630, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Died:  30 Dec 1698, Charles, MD, USA

William Gavin Hamilton was born about 1630 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.  He was the son of John Hamilton and Agnes Semphill.

Gavin married Elspeth "Elizabeth" Norrie on 10 Jun 1658 in Edinburgh, Edinburghshire, Midlothian, Scotland.  Elspeth was born 06 May 1638 in Edinburgh, Edinburghshire, Midlothian, Scotland, the daughter of James Norrie and Margaret Maefell.

Gavin and Elspeth had at least 3 children:
Name Birth Date Death Date Spouse

(Daughter) Hamilton

"Three Hamiltons of Maryland: Gavin, Andrew, Ninian"

By Rev. Gordon & Dolores Shepherd Miltenberger

Gavin Hamilton, resident of Calvert County Maryland, received land 20 Feb 1685 in Charles County, Maryland, called "Hamilton" containing 150 acres.  In 1686 - 88, he added 87 acres in Calvert County, Maryland, to his holdings.  In the same year, 1686, Gavin was taxed in New Scotland Hundred, Charles County for 150 acres called "Hamilton Survey", which was held by Andrew Hamilton and William Tannehill; Andrew, having in his possession 29 acres and William having in his possession 121 acres.  The land called "Hamilton" and the land called "Hamilton Survey" could be the same piece of land.  There is no explanation for the possession of the land.
      We can speculate:
1. Andrew Hamilton had come of age
2. William Tannehill may have been related by marriage
3. Gavin Hamilton had paid William Tannehill in land for services rendered or for a debt.

The patent for "Hamilton" in Charles County was for 150 acres on the "south side of Eastern Branch of Potomack, Chestnut Oat...".  These are probably the same.

Gavin died before 30 Dec 1698 in Prince George's County, MD.

The Will of Gavin Hamilton

In THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN - The last will and testament of Gawin (Gavin) Hamilton of Prince George County - planter - being sick in body but sound in memory and judgmement.

In the first, I recommend my soul to Almighty God from whom I received the same - hoping through ye mercy of Jesus Christ for redemption of my sins - and my body is to be buried at ye discretion of the Honorable Col. John Addison and William Tannerhill of the county aforesaid.

Secondly, it is my will that Col. John Addison and William Tannerhill, being hereby left as curator and purser to my children, that they in ye first place set apart my wife's third, and in the second place divide the remaining two parts equal among my three children - with which division they are to be satisfied without further trouble of rule of law or controversy, and notwithstanding ye aforesaid division, it is my will that they all live together as they have done formerly, without being entered and ordered by their Executors aforesaid - only this escepted.

That Madam Addison would be pleased to take my two girls, one at a time, leaving the other with her mother and brother - to give them some education and good breeding as long and howso ever she thinks fit, and as for ye Col. John Addison and William Tannerhill's trouble, I advise that they may satisfy themselves for their own trouble out of anything that is or was missed being equally divided amongst the possessors - And this I declare to be my last will, hereby making void all former and other wills made by me.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this -- day of -- 1698.

                                                                           G. Hamilton [Seal]
Signed, sealed and delivered
in the presence of

And on ye back of the foregoing will was thus endored: December 30, 1698.  Then came Robert Hurd and Henry Karmenlopp and made oath upon the holy Evangelist that they saw the William Gawin Hamilton sign ye -- will, to ye best of their remembrance about the middle of March last past.

Robert Hurd [Seal] His Mark
