Jay Corban "J.C." Goble

Born: 29 Sep 1916, Alexander County, NC
Died:  19 Jul 2005, Catawba County, NC

Jay Corban Goble was the fifth child born to Marin Luther Goble and Beulah Vernesta Johnson.  Jay Corban, called "J.C.", was born 29 Sep 1916 in Alexander County, North Carolina.  His birth certificate lists his legal name as J. C. Goble.

The family lived in Alexander and Iredell County.  Martin and Nessie moved their family to Catawba County around 1933.  They moved into Pump Alley’s old house on (Pump) Alley Rd. (about 0.1 mile on the right), just off of Sherrills Ford Rd. near Catawba, NC.  It was a small 3 room house.  The kids all slept in one bedroom - in two beds.  They didn’t have mattresses for the bed and slept on straw ticks.  When the straw became flattened, it could be replaced.  Lib, Helen and Willie & Elgevia slept in one bed, while Legs, Harlee & JC slept in another one.

The Goble family were share-croppers.  J.C., being one of the older children, was frequently in charge of seeing that his siblings stayed on task when they were working in the garden.

Willie Goble Loftin said, "He'd tell us that he had weighed the cotton we had picked from the day before and that if we didn’t pick as much the next day, he’d 'beat our butts!'"
