James Henry Goble was the
second child born
to Marin Luther Goble and Beulah Vernesta Johnson. James
Henry was born 08 Apr 1912. He was tall and skinny and
carried the nickname "Legs" throughout his life, being called "Leggs"
by family and friends. |

The Martin
Goble family
lived in Alexander County, then Iredell County. Around
1933 Martin and Nessie moved their family to Catawba County and into Pump Alley’s old house.
It was located about 0.1 mile on the right on Alley Rd. and just off of Sherrills Ford Rd. near Catawba,
NC. It was a small 3 room house. The kids all slept in one
bedroom - in two beds. They didn’t have mattresses for the bed
and slept on straw ticks. When the straw became flattened, it
could be replaced. Lib, Helen and Willie & Elgevia slept in one
bed, while Leggs, Harlee & JC slept in another one. |
|
Martin was
happiest when he was hunting or fishing. Leggs was a lot
like his father in that respect. His other passion was
baseball. Leggs loved baseball and traveled frequently with the Howard's
Furniture Company baseball team. |

|
|
The Goble
family were share-croppers. Leggs, being the older
child, was frequently in charge of seeing that his siblings
stayed on task when they were working in the fields. The
main crop was cotton. The family would word the fields for
the owner of the land where they lived, and would receive a
portion of the income from the sell of the crop. |

James Henry was
a "head" taller than Martin, and looked like he was "all legs",
thus the nickname "Leggs" He wasn't the only one in the
family with a nickname though. Leggs' brother Harlee was
called "Doc", Lib was "Can", Helen was "Men", Willie was "Bill",
and J.C. Was "Tud". |
|
|
|
Leggs married Nina M. Eades. Nina was a sister to J.C.
wife Ada. Nina was born 02 May 1922. |
