The Douglas Family

Name Origin: Scotland

The members of the current generation of Douglas family have inherited a name that was first used hundreds of years ago by the people of the ancient Scottish tribe called the Picts.  The Douglas family lived in Moray (part of the modern region of Grampian), where the family has a long and distinguished history dating back to early times.

Some claim the name is derived brom a knight of 770 who after aiding King Solvathius of Scotland in his great battle with Donald Bain, King of the Western Isles was granted the lands of Cydesdale.

Others claim the name was originally derived from Theobaldus, a Flemming and were granted the lands of Douglas Water.

The Douglas Clan was one of the more distinguished and ilustrious clans.  In Gaelic, the name is Dudhglas which means black stream.

First found in Moray where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William of Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Motto Translated: "Never Behind"

Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Dubhghlas, which meant "dark river" or "blood river" from Gaelic dubh "dark" and glais "water, river". Douglas was originally a river name, the site of a particularly bloody battle, which then became a Scottish surname. The surname belonged to a powerful line of Scottish earls.

The Douglas family line connected to the Goble family line when Frances Elizabeth Douglas married Jacob Hedrick Goble.
