Epcot 1996, 1997 & 2000 |
|
|
 |
|
Epcot is a theme park at the Walt Disne World Resort in Bay
Lake, Florida. Inspired by an unrealized concept developed by
Walt Disney, the park opened on 01 Oct 1982, as Epcot Center,
and was the second of four theme parks built at Walt Disney
World. It spans 305 acres and is more than twice the size of
Magic Kingdom. Epcot is dedicated to the celebration of human
achievement, namely technoligical innovation and international
culture, and is often referred to as a "permanent world's fair."
The park's name, EPCOT, was previously an acronym for
"Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow", a utopian city
of the future. |

FUTURE WORLD |
|
|
EPCOT is basically divided into two different sections, (1)
Future World, and (2) World Showcase. Future world is the first
section of the park after the entrance and included different
pavilions such as Spaceship Earth, Ennoventions, The Living
Seas, The Land, Journey Into Imagination, Horizons, Test Track,
Wonders of Life and Universe of Energy. But the part is
constantly changing. Some of the pavilions that were there
previously are not there now. This page shows photos from our
trips in 1996, 1997 and 2000. |

SPACESHIP EARTH |
|
|
SPACESHIP EARTH is a geodesic sphere that serves as the symbolic
tructure of EPCOT. It is also the name of the dark-ride
attraction that is housed within the sphere that takes guest on
a time-machine-themed experience. |

The 15-minute dark ride demonstrates to guests how advancements
in human communication have helped to create the future one step
at a time. Passengers journey back in time to witness the
origins of prehistoric man, then travel forward in time to
witness breakthroughs in communication throughout history - from
the invention of the alphabet to the creation of the printing
press to today's modern communication advancements. |

Visitors witness cavemen drawing on walls, the creation
of the Phoenician alphabet, Greek drama, papyrus being used
by the Egyptians and the printing press. |
 |

As the time machine continues into the Information Age,
guests see the invention of the telegraph, telephone, and
satelite communications The trip ends with an awe-inspiring
view of Earth from space showing it to be truly "Spaceship
Earth" |

INNOVENTIONS |
|
|
INNOVENTIONS was an ever-changing collection of exhibits at the
EPCOT theme park in Walt Disney World, Florida. It focused on
technological advancements and their practical applications in
everyday life. Innoventions first opened in 1994. In 1999,
Innoventions had a major renovation for the park's Millennium
Celebration and added the subtitle "The Road to Tomorrow."
Today, the building that formerly housed innoventions East is
being used as a temporary MouseGear store while the building
that formerly housed Innoventions West is currently in the
process of being demolished to make way for a brand new festival
center and the Journey of Water attraction. Innoventions comes
from the two words "Innovations" and "Inventions" |

The Mandala Module was a Virtual Reality Game at EPCOT. Philip
and Beth played it at INNOVENTIONS. The object of the game was
to collect as many treasure chests as you could without being
eaten by sharks or eels. You were photographed by a video camera
dn your image was added to the playing screen. When you held you
hands up, you'd go up. You'd have to stoop if you wanted to go
down. Leaning to the Left and Right would cause you to move in
that diretion on the screen. Philip scored 4th and Beth 9th out
of 350 that had played the game that day. |

THE LIVING SEAS |
|
|
The Seas With Nemo & Friends, formerly called THE LIVING SEAS,
is an aquarium and attached dark ride attraction located on the
western side of Future World at Epcot. The pavilion is themed as
an underwater exploration base called SeaBase Alpha, with
several exhibits devoted to oceanic study. The pavilion opened
in 1986. In 2003, the name was changed to The Seas With Nemo &
Friends. |

HORIZONS |
|
|
HORIZONS was a dark ride attraction at EPCOT. Located on the
eastern side of "Future World", the attraction used Disney's
Omnimover conveyance system, which took guests past show scenes
depicting visions of the future. It is believed to be the sequel
to Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress, an attraction in
Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom. HORIZONS was the only attraction
in "Future World" to showcast all of Epcot's "Future World"
elements: communication, community interaction, energy,
transportation, anatomy, physiology, along with humanking's
relationship the the sea, land, air and space. The attraction
officially open on 01 Oct 1983. The attraction permanently
closed on 09 Jan 1999, after which the attraction was dismantled
and its structure demolished to make room for Mission: SPACE, an
motion simulator thrill ride that opened in 2003. |

THE
LAND |
|
|
THE LAND is a pavilion that sits on the western side of Future
World at EPCOT. The pavilion is dedicated to human interaction
with the Earth, focusing on agriculture and travel. It opened in
1982 and focuses on how humans can both use the land for their
benefit and how they can also destroy it. |

LIVING WITH THE LAND: This 13.5 minute boat ride takes you
through the rain forest and greehouses of this pavilion. We
sailed through tropical swamps, prairie grain fields, and family
farms before entering a fantastic living-plant research
laboratory-solarium. Here the Earth's major food crops,
fruits, and vegetables are being grown in high-tech research
projects along with rare new crops. We saw plants growin in the
air and in wather - both without soil. |

JOURNEY INTO IMAGINATION |
|
|
At JOURNEY INTO IMAGINATION we donned 3-D glasses for the
"Inventor of the Year Awards". First Professor Wayne Szalinski
shrunk the kids, then he blew up the baby, now he is shrinking
the entire studio audience. We felt mice running up our legs,
saw a large snake stick its head out into the audience and even
got a little wet when the dog sneezed. It was lots of fun. |

THE
KRISTOS |
|
|
One of our favorite acts at EPCOT was The KRISTOS. We caught
their act at our last evening at Epcot in 1997, but I had used
all my film, so I didn't get any photos. I wrote to them at
EPCOT and they sent me some photos. They wore unique costumes as
they performed their "Alien Acrobatic Show". |
