Their ancestors were French Huguenots leaving France sometime
during the year sixteen hundred, before the revoking of the
Edict of Nantes - some going to England and some to Germany.
Wilhelm and Paulina Barringer (Behringer) had six
children: John Paul, Mathias, George Henry, Annie Maria,
Catherine and Dolly.
John Paul, the oldest son, was born 4 June 1721, in the
Duchy of Württemberg, Germany. He was the first Barringer
to come to America. He arrived 30 Sept 1743. Within
a year, he married Ann Eliza Eisman. After five years he
sent to Germany for his parents, brothers and sisters.
Wilhelm and Paulina were getting old, but they decided
to make the trip to America. The voyage from Hamburg to
Philadelphia took about four week. On the way both parents
got sick and died; they were buried at sea. The ship "Palena",
with John Brown as Master, landed at Philadelphia on 16
September 1748.
Mathias was now in charge of the party. They had
to wait in Philadelphia, with some friends, for John Paul to
send for them and take them to North Carolina. Mathias
lived with his brother on Dutch Buffalo Creek for a number of
years. His sisters married and established their own
homes. After Mathias learned to drill soldiers, John Paul
organized a company of Royal Militia and made him the
Lieutenant. |
