The Barringer / Behringer Family
Name Origin: English, German The ancient Anglo Saxon (English) surname Barrigner came from the German name Behringer. The surname probably arrived in England shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066, since the Normans imported many laborers from the continent in order to expedite their hold on England.

The prestigious family surname Barringer/Behringer originated in the territory that eventually became the German state of Prussia. In the 19th century, this state was virtually unrivalled militarily, and its rapid industrial growth made it a contender for economic superiority in Europe as well. In the medieval era, however, Prussia was fragmented and inhabited by numerous barbarian tribes, who fought amongst themselves for control of the land. The name became noted for its many branches within the region where each house acquired a status and influence which was envied by the princes of the region. The Behringer/Barringer line connected to the Setzer family line when Catherine Bushart Barringer married John Setzer I.
